Getting Through the COVID-19 Pandemic With Peace and Hope
In just a mere few weeks, COVID-19 has changed our world in more ways than most people could have imagined. Here’s how to get through this time with peace and hope.
A lot has changed in the past thirty days. Over the month, we went from a general awareness of the novel coronavirus to toilet paper hoarding, school and business closures, social distancing, to where we are today. It’s a type of crisis that most of us have never experienced in our lifetimes, and with no definite “return to normal” date it can make it seem worse.
While our new, temporary “normal” may not be fun to embrace, there are still ways to find peace and hope despite the turmoil of events that surrounds us.
Realize that you still have control.
The current state of the world can cause anxiety, especially if you focus on the things that you cannot control, so it’s important to recognize the things that you CAN control. For an example, it can feel good making a list of things that you would like to get done before life returns to normal. The list can be a great way to stay focused on the things that you can control.
Stay connected with others.
With the “stay at home” orders, many of us are not seeing the family and friends that we’re used to seeing. This can be hard. Spending time in person may not be possible; however, there are other ways to stay connected, including social media, phone calls, and video conferencing, such as Zoom.
Stay balanced and take care of yourself.
Whether you’re a medical or another essential worker or you’re at home, it’s vital to make sure that you’re taking care of yourself. Taking control of areas in your life and staying connected with others is part of taking care of yourself, but there are other ways to do this too. When you feel yourself getting stressed, take a moment and try to relax; take a walk, meditate, write your favorite inspirational quotes or verses, or practice relaxing breathing techniques. Try to avoid obsessing over the things that you cannot control, and that may bring you down. And remember, we’re in this together and we will come out stronger from the lessons we’ve learned.
